Discover the secret to a happy marriage

Everyone wants to know the secret to a happy marriage, but few will ever discover the truth…

It is a Jewish custom for newlyweds to celebrate with family, friends, and community for 7 days after being married. After a festive meal, attendees offer 7 ancient benedictions to benefit the couple. Each benediction offers deeply profound insight into marriage. Benediction number 6 of the 7 blesses the couple to live as if they were in the Garden of Eden.

Grant abundant joy to these loving friends, as You bestowed gladness upon Your created being in the Garden of Eden of old. Blessed are You L-rd, who gladdens the groom and bride.

-Newlywed Benediction #6

We see that the blessing links marital happiness to the Garden of Eden. What was special about the relationship Adam and Eve shared in the Garden of Eden? There was no competition. Adam and Eve enjoyed oneness, because there was no one else to compare their spouse against.

Oneness is the key to a happy marriage.  Now let’s delve further into this idea.

Oneness Means Never Comparing

The real Adam and Eve may not even have been attractive according to modern standards. But that didn’t matter to them, because even if Eve had a beard and Adam had a gullet, they wouldn’t have known the difference. So even if Eve had a tendency to nag and Adam snored like a bear they would have had no dissatisfaction since there was no one to compare them against?

Oneness Means Being Content

Since Adam and Eve never compared themselves, their relationship, or one another to anyone else they felt no lacking.  They were happy together, in the Garden of Eden, because they were content with what they had.

Oneness Means Showing Appreciation

Since Adam and Eve were content with one another they presumably appreciated the other, and therefor felt appreciated.

Wouldn’t it be nice to live like that?

Is Oneness Possible Outside of the Garden?

Modernity presents challenges which did not exist in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve lived in such innocence that it didn’t even bother them when they were not wearing clothes. They had all of their needs provided, and had nothing to be sorry about. Today, things just aren’t like that, but we can learn from it.

The key to marriage that modernity has forgotten goes something like this.
